Guitar Amp Attenuator Known as Ampwell House

Overview

The goal of the project is to build an 8-Ohm guitar amp attenuator using an 8-Ohm L-Pad with the possibility having 4 & 16 Ohm versions.

Explanation

The wiring portion of the project consumed less time than preparing the can. Since the metal tore rather than drilled clean, drilling that thin metal was a drag. A dremel tool was used to shape the insert for the fan and a hole saw for the fan mounts. A fan is mounted in the bottom to keep things as cool as possible and to supply a constant air flow, vent holes were drilled in the top.

The Expresso/Decaf switch that adds a little crunch back into the tone is a bright switch. Since the less attenuation available makes it less effective and vice versa, the treble bypass works like a bright switch on an amp. By hardwiring the cap across the Light/Strong bypass witch, this switch can be eliminated and have it ON all the time. The Light/Strong switch completely removes the attenuator from the signal path since it is a full true bypass switch which uses shorting jack for OT protection.
