UV LEDs Used for Detecting Scorpion

Overview

The project features a homemade scorpion detection device using a bunch of UV lights instead of using a UV flashlight for the same purpose.

Explanation

The use of UV LED can provide a luminous intensity of 510 mcd with a viewing angle of 20 degrees. The peak emission wavelength reaches 395nm with a forward voltage of 3.6V at 20mA forward current. There are 50 5mm UV LEDs purchased for this project.

To create the circuit board for the UV LED scorpion detector, a small pre-drilled circuit board with some copper traces was used. New connections were made using parts of the cutoff legs of the LEDs after cutting some traces. The LEDs were grouped in 4x3 rectangles. A piece of paper was used to cover the LEDs when each row of 3 LEDs was tested. The same way of soldering and testing on the 3 other groups was done after finishing the first group. A total of 48 UV LEDs was in the final result.

The adapter has a maximum voltage rating of 12V to handle 3 series LEDs . Instead of batteries, this universal adapter with extension was chosen.
